The Chess Club at RLC serves students from Kindergarten through 12th grade, organized into three groups: Elementary (K–5), Middle School (6–8), and High School (9–12) — each with a curriculum tailored to that age group's skill level and competitive goals.
No prior experience is necessary for the Elementary level. Our K–5 sessions introduce piece movement, basic strategy, and chess fundamentals from scratch through interactive lessons, games, and puzzles in a fun, supportive environment.
RLC follows guidelines set by the US Chess Federation. The curriculum progresses from fundamentals (piece movement, elementary strategy) at the elementary level through tactics, openings, and positional play at middle school, up to advanced opening repertoires, middlegame tactics, and endgame mastery at the high school level.
Yes. Tournament preparation is built into all levels. Students practice with mock matches, puzzles, and simulations in Swiss and Round-Robin formats. Middle and high school students are prepared for local, state, and national tournaments.
High School coaching focuses on advanced opening repertoires, deep middlegame tactics, and endgame mastery for competitive tournaments. Elementary coaching focuses on building love for the game and introducing fundamentals. Middle School bridges the two — developing strategic understanding and preparing for regional competitions.
You can register online through our student portal (myportal) or contact your nearest branch. We offer a free trial class so your child can experience the coaching style before committing to a program.
